Entirely Useless, But Rather Wonderful

What’s a completely useless fact you love sharing?

I have a confession to make.

I occasionally enjoy sharing facts that are so completely useless they serve absolutely no practical purpose whatsoever.

You know the sort. The kind of information that makes somebody stop, look at you, and wonder what on earth possessed you to learn such a thing in the first place.

My current favourite?

Wombats do cube-shaped poo.

There. I’ve said it.

Not round. Not oval. Little cubes.

Apparently, these furry Australian creatures produce droppings with remarkably square edges, which helps them stay put when used to mark their territory.

Because, naturally, if you’re going to leave a little message for the neighbours, you don’t want it rolling down the hill before they’ve had a chance to read it.

Now, I appreciate that this information is unlikely to help me with my tax return, improve my cooking or make me a better dancer.

But I absolutely love it.

And that’s the thing about useless facts. They make perfectly wonderful conversation starters.

Imagine sitting in a café, discussing the weather, somebody’s holiday plans and the price of a decent cup of coffee, when suddenly you announce that wombats produce geometric excrement.

You can almost hear the conversation coming to a halt.

Of course, I have other facts tucked away in my head. Some are interesting, some are surprising, and a few are probably best kept to myself until the appropriate moment.

Although I’m not entirely sure when the appropriate moment to discuss wombat poo might be.

Perhaps at a wildlife park.

Or a particularly unusual dinner party.

My father, would probably prefer a discussion about Glenn Miller. Uncle Frank would likely find the whole thing hilarious and start inventing jokes that would make my mother reach for her smelling salts.

But I digress.

I rather think the world needs a little more room for harmless nonsense.

Not every conversation needs to be profound. Not every piece of information needs to make us wiser, wealthier or more productive.

Sometimes it’s perfectly acceptable to learn something ridiculous simply because it makes you smile.

So, now I’ve shared mine, I’d love to hear yours.

What’s a completely useless fact living rent-free in your head?

Something you absolutely didn’t need to know, but are delighted to know anyway.

And please, darling, don’t be shy. I have a reputation for collecting this sort of information to maintain.

Stay Fabulous,
Luce 💋
