If you had to sum up your life philosophy in one sentence, what would it be?
If I had to sum up my life philosophy in one sentence, I think it would be this:
“Be kind, stay curious, dance when the music starts, and never make someone feel they don’t belong.”
It’s not particularly complicated, is it?
I’ve never been terribly convinced that life is about having all the right answers. Goodness knows, I’ve spent enough time getting things wrong to know that certainty can be a rather expensive hobby.
I’d much rather keep asking questions.
Be curious about people. About their stories, their experiences, the things that make them laugh and the things they quietly carry around with them. You never really know what’s happening behind somebody’s smile, and a little patience can make an enormous difference.
Be kind, too. Not the sort of kindness that needs an audience or a round of applause. Just the ordinary, everyday kind. Holding a door. Offering a compliment. Making room at the table. Noticing the person standing on the edge of the room wondering whether they’re welcome.
Especially that person.
And when the music starts? Well, darling, don’t spend the whole evening worrying about whether you’ve got the steps right. Get out there! You might stumble, you might step on somebody’s toes, but at least you’ll have danced.
Life is rather like that, I think. We don’t get to choose every tune, and occasionally the band plays something we simply weren’t expecting. But we can choose how we meet it.
We can make room for others. We can stand up for people when it matters. We can laugh at ourselves when we’ve been complete pillocks. And we can remember that being right isn’t always as important as being decent.
I don’t expect to change the world single-handedly. I’m not even sure I’d know where to begin.
But if somebody leaves a conversation with me feeling a little more welcome, a little more understood, or perhaps just a little less alone, then I reckon I’ve done something worthwhile.
And perhaps that’s enough.
So, there you have it. My philosophy, in one sentence.

Especially if there’s room for one more at the table.
