The Day I Had Absolutely No Plan

What’s the most spontaneous thing you’ve ever done?

I once woke up one morning and decided I needed to get out.

Not “I should probably go somewhere this weekend.”

Not “Perhaps I’ll book something for next month.”

I mean that morning.

I got dressed, grabbed my bag and went to the station.

I didn’t have a destination in mind.

I simply looked at the departures board and thought:

Well… that one looks interesting.

So I got on the train.

No itinerary.

No hotel reservation.

No list of things I absolutely had to see.

Just me, a ticket and absolutely no idea what I was doing.

And do you know what?

It was glorious.

I wandered around somewhere I’d never planned to visit, found a little café, sat down with a coffee and watched people go about their day.

I walked down streets simply because they looked interesting.

I stopped when something caught my eye.

I changed direction because I felt like it.

There was no schedule to ruin.

No carefully planned afternoon to fall behind.

At one point I remember thinking:

“I have absolutely no idea where I’m going.”

And instead of being alarming, it felt wonderfully liberating.

We’re so used to planning everything.

Where we’re going.

When we’ll arrive.

What we’ll eat.

What we’ll see.

How long we’ll stay.

Sometimes I think we forget how lovely it can be to leave a little room for the unexpected.

Of course, spontaneity isn’t always sensible.

Sometimes “let’s just see what happens” is how you end up with a questionable haircut and a regrettable pair of shoes.

But every now and then, I think it’s good for us.

Not because every spontaneous decision will become a wonderful memory.

Some will be disasters.

Those can become funny stories later.

But because spontaneity reminds us that life doesn’t always have to be managed.

Sometimes it can simply be experienced.

That day wasn’t particularly spectacular.

I didn’t climb a mountain.

I didn’t meet a celebrity.

There wasn’t some enormous life-changing revelation waiting for me.

I just went somewhere I hadn’t planned to go.

And somehow, that made the whole day feel like an adventure.

Perhaps that’s the secret.

You don’t always need a grand adventure.

Sometimes you just need to leave the front door without knowing exactly what comes next.

And if someone asks where you’re going?

Smile mysteriously.

Say:

“I haven’t decided yet.”

Then keep walking.

Stay Fabulous,
Luce 💋
