The Best Things Aren’t Always Valuable

What’s the best thing you’ve ever found randomly on the street?

A wallet would be the obvious answer.

Money.

Jewellery.

Something expensive that makes you look around and wonder whether you’ve just won the pedestrian lottery.

But honestly?

The best thing I’ve ever found wasn’t worth very much at all.

It was a little handwritten note.

I found it folded up on the pavement one afternoon. No name. No address. Just a few words written on a scrap of paper.

I don’t even remember exactly what it said anymore.

But I remember how it made me feel.

Someone had clearly written it for someone they cared about.

And somehow, it had ended up on the street.

I stood there holding this tiny piece of somebody else’s life and wondered about the story behind it.

Who had written it?

Who was it meant for?

Had they dropped it without noticing?

Had the intended person ever received the message?

I suppose I’ll never know.

And perhaps that’s why I remember it.

We walk past thousands of little fragments of other people’s lives without ever noticing them.

A photograph.

A child’s drawing.

A shopping list.

A receipt.

A note.

Tiny evidence that somewhere, someone was living a life just as complicated and ordinary as ours.

Finding that little note reminded me that we rarely know the whole story behind what we encounter.

And perhaps that’s something worth remembering when we’re looking at people too.

We see the outside.

We see the moment.

We see the bit that happened to land in front of us.

We don’t necessarily see what came before it.

So yes, the best thing I ever found on the street was a little piece of paper that probably wasn’t worth a penny.

But it made me stop.

It made me wonder.

And it reminded me that every stranger we pass is carrying a story we know nothing about.

That’s worth far more than anything I could have found in a wallet.

Although…

If anyone happens to find a handbag full of diamonds, I am perfectly willing to reconsider.
