The Kindness I Still Remember

What’s the kindest thing someone has ever done for you?

I could probably name a dozen things.

Someone who showed up when I needed them.

Someone who listened when I couldn’t quite find the words.

Someone who gave me a second chance when I probably hadn’t earned one.

But when I really think about it, the kindness that stays with me isn’t necessarily the biggest gesture.

It’s being noticed.

Someone once noticed that I wasn’t quite myself.

I hadn’t said anything. I wasn’t asking for help. I was doing that thing we all do sometimes where we smile, say “I’m fine” and carry on.

But they noticed.

And instead of asking a hundred questions or trying to fix me, they simply stayed.

A cup of coffee appeared.

A little conversation happened.

And there was this unspoken message:

“You don’t have to pretend with me.”

That’s kindness.

Not fixing.

Not judging.

Not demanding an explanation.

Just noticing that somebody might need a little extra room to breathe.

I’ve thought about that many times since.

Because we tend to imagine kindness as something grand.

Giving someone a second chance.

Helping a stranger.

Standing up for someone.

And yes, those things matter enormously.

But sometimes kindness is much smaller.

It’s remembering someone’s name.

It’s checking in because you remembered they had a difficult day.

It’s saving someone a seat.

It’s saying “I’ve got you” and actually meaning it.

It’s pulling up a chair.

And perhaps the nicest thing about kindness is that it doesn’t cost us very much.

Ten seconds.

A message.

A smile.

A little attention.

But to the person receiving it, those ten seconds can sometimes mean everything.

I’ve never forgotten what it feels like to be noticed when you’re trying very hard not to be noticed.

So these days, I try to pay attention.

Because maybe the person smiling across the table is having a terrible day.

Maybe the person who seems distant simply needs someone to ask.

Maybe somebody doesn’t need advice at all.

Maybe they just need a chair.

And if I have one to spare?

Come sit down.

Stay fabulous,
Luce 💋
