How do you deal with uncertainty?
I used to think uncertainty was something I had to solve.
If I didn’t know what was coming next, I’d try to work it out. I’d make plans, consider every possible outcome, replay conversations, imagine the things that could go wrong.
As though worrying about tomorrow could somehow give me control over it.
These days, I’m learning to leave some questions unanswered.
I don’t need to know exactly how everything will work out.
I don’t need to know what someone else is thinking.
I don’t need to know whether a decision will still feel right six months from now.
I don’t need to know who will stay, who will leave, or which unexpected door might open somewhere along the way.
Some things are allowed to remain unknown.
That doesn’t mean I’m careless. I still make plans. I still think things through. I still do what I can with the information I have.
But there’s a difference between being prepared and demanding certainty.
I’ve learned that certainty isn’t the same thing as safety.
Sometimes we tell ourselves, “If I only knew what was going to happen, I’d feel better.”
But would we?
Life has a funny habit of changing the script even when we think we’ve memorised it.
So perhaps the better question isn’t, “How do I make sure everything turns out okay?”
Perhaps it’s:
“Do I trust myself to handle it if it doesn’t?”
That question changed something for me.
Because I don’t need to know what’s around every corner anymore.
I just need to know that I’ll turn the corner when I get there.
There are things I don’t need to know yet.
Some answers can wait.
Some decisions can wait.
Some chapters haven’t been written.
And perhaps that’s not a flaw in the story.
Perhaps that’s the point.
Sometimes the most peaceful thing you can say to yourself is:
“I don’t know yet. And that’s okay.”
Stay fabulous,
Luce 💋
