If you had a time machine and could send just one message to your past self, what would it say?
If I had a time machine and could send just one message to my younger self, I don’t think I’d tell her what was going to happen.
I wouldn’t give her the winning lottery numbers. I wouldn’t warn her about every heartbreak. I wouldn’t hand her a map with every wrong turn marked in red.
Because as tempting as that sounds, I think knowing everything would take something important away from her.
So I’d give her something much simpler.
Stop being so afraid that you’re getting it wrong.
You are not behind.
You are not failing because you haven’t figured everything out yet.
And you are certainly not required to have your entire life mapped out just because everyone around you appears to have theirs together.
They don’t.
Some of the things you’re worrying about right now won’t matter in ten years. Some of the things you think are permanent will change.
Some people you desperately want to keep will leave, and one day you’ll understand that their leaving wasn’t the end of your story.
You’ll change too.
And honestly? That’s the part I wish you’d known.
You are going to become someone you haven’t even met yet. She’ll be stronger in some ways and softer in others. She’ll learn when to fight and when to walk away. She’ll discover that being kind doesn’t mean being endlessly accommodating, and that saying no doesn’t make her a bad person.
She’ll laugh at things you currently take very seriously.
She’ll stop apologising for taking up space. She’ll realise that she doesn’t need everybody to understand her.
And she’ll finally understand that life isn’t a race to some imaginary finish line where everyone else is already waiting.
There will be detours.
There will be spectacular mistakes.
There will be beautiful surprises you couldn’t possibly have planned for.
So, younger me, breathe.
You don’t need to know exactly where you’re going.
You just need to keep going.
One day, you’ll look back at the girl who was so worried about getting everything right and you’ll wish you could hug her.
And if I could send only one message through time, it would be this:
Don’t be afraid of the life you haven’t met yet. Somewhere ahead of you is a version of yourself you haven’t even imagined.
She’s worth waiting for.
Stay fabulous,
Luce 💋
