What’s the best local dish you’ve ever eaten while traveling?
I’ve eaten plenty of memorable food while travelling. Some of it was expensive. Some of it came with beautiful views, polished silverware and a menu that probably cost more than my first car.
But the best local dish I’ve ever eaten?
It was a bowl of something wonderfully ordinary.
I was travelling through southern France when I stopped at a tiny little place that looked as though it had been there forever. No fancy sign. No particularly impressive entrance. Just a few tables outside, a handful of locals eating lunch and the sort of handwritten menu that makes you realize you probably should have paid more attention during French lessons.
I ordered what everyone else seemed to be having.
And honestly? Heaven.
It wasn’t complicated food. It was fresh, local, beautifully prepared and served without any fuss whatsoever. The kind of meal where you take the first bite and immediately stop talking because you don’t want to waste a second of it.
But what made it memorable wasn’t really the dish.
It was the setting.
The warm afternoon. The conversation drifting between tables. The smell of bread and coffee. The elderly gentleman at the next table who smiled at me when he noticed how much I was enjoying my lunch.
I’ve learned that travelling has a funny way of teaching us that the things we remember aren’t always the things we planned to remember.
Sometimes it’s the spectacular view.
Sometimes it’s the person you meet.
And sometimes it’s a plate of completely unpretentious local food that makes you sit back afterwards and think:
“Yep. This is exactly where I’m supposed to be.”
So now I’m curious.
What’s the best local dish you’ve ever eaten while travelling?
And more importantly — where were you when you ate it?
Stay fabulous,
Luce 💋
