The Skill I’d Choose

If you could instantly master any skill, what would it be and why?

If I could instantly master any skill, I don’t think it would be a language, an instrument or a sport.

I’d choose the ability to truly listen.

Not just hear the words someone is saying, but understand what they mean beneath them.

The older I get, the more I realize how rare that skill is.

Many of us are busy thinking about what we’re going to say next. We listen just enough to prepare our response.

But the people who leave the biggest impression are often the ones who make us feel heard.

A good listener can learn from almost anyone.

They can understand different perspectives, build stronger relationships and notice things others miss.

Perhaps that’s why listening feels less like a talent and more like a doorway to many other skills.

If I could master one thing instantly, I think I’d choose that.
