Keep What Matters

Do you believe in minimalism?

I think that depends entirely on what you mean by it.

If minimalism means owning only seven matching bowls, two chairs and a plant that somehow survives on optimism alone, then probably not.

I grew up in a house where books multiplied when nobody was looking.

Dad still owns things because they remind him of a person, a place or a story.

Mum kept things because they might be useful.

So no, I don’t think I’m a minimalist in the traditional sense.

I like photographs.

I like books.

I like old letters.

I like the little objects that quietly remind us where we’ve been and who we’ve loved.

But I do think there is something appealing about letting go of things that no longer serve a purpose.

Not just possessions.

Worries.

Expectations.

Old grudges.

The pressure to keep doing something simply because you’ve always done it.

Those things can take up far more space than anything sitting on a shelf.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve found myself becoming less interested in having more and more interested in appreciating what I already have.

A good book.

A comfortable chair.

A cup of tea.

The people I care about.

Most of life’s best things don’t require much storage space.

So no, I don’t really believe in minimalism.

But I do believe in keeping what matters and letting the rest go.

That feels close enough.

Stay fabulous,
Luce 💋
