What’s a word or phrase that annoys you?
You know those phrases people say that immediately make your brain quietly leave the room for a few seconds?
Mine is probably:
“We need to circle back.”
No, we do not need to circle back.
We need:
- less meetings,
- stronger coffee,
- and whoever invented “touch base” to take a week off.
Another one that somehow manages to make me irrationally annoyed is:
“Living my best life.”
Mostly because the people announcing they’re “living their best life” usually look deeply stressed while holding a green smoothie in an airport somewhere.
I always imagine someone posting:
“Living my best life ✨”
while two minutes earlier they were fighting a self-check-in machine and threatening to throw their passport into the sea.
And don’t even get me started on:
“It is what it is.”
That phrase is usually delivered right after:
- a disaster,
- a bad haircut,
- or somebody reversing into a lamp post.
Personally, if I reverse into a lamp post, I would prefer:
“Well this has taken a turn.”
I think phrases annoy us because once you hear them too many times, they stop sounding human and start sounding like somebody copied them out of a motivational LinkedIn post.
Real conversations are messy.
People ramble.
People say odd things.
People panic and accidentally call the waiter “mum.”
That’s life.
Honestly, I’d rather hear somebody say:
“I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing.”
than:
“I’m embracing the journey.”
No you’re not. You’re crying in the IKEA parking lot.
Anyway.
That’s my little rant for today ☕
Now I’m curious…
What’s a word or phrase that instantly annoys you?
Stay fabulous,
Luce 💋
