What’s a classic book that you think is overrated?
I’m about to say something that may get me quietly removed from several intellectual book clubs.
I think Moby Dick is overrated.
There. It’s out now.
And before literary scholars begin loading harpoons, let me say this:
I completely understand why it matters historically.
The symbolism.
The obsession.
The philosophy.
The giant whale of emotional suffering floating through every chapter.
I appreciate all of it in theory.
In practice, however, I spent half the book wondering why we were still discussing whales.
At one point I genuinely forgot there was even supposed to be a story happening.
It felt less like reading a novel and more like accidentally joining a very determined maritime lecture.
I am certain there are those who think Moby Dick is “the greatest practical manual ever written” because apparently it contains “useful information about ropes.”
I think sometimes people confuse:
“important” with ”enjoyable.”
Those are not always the same thing.
Some classics genuinely changed literature forever.
Others feel a bit like being trapped at sea with somebody who desperately wants to explain the history of boat wood.
And honestly, if a book makes you repeatedly check how many pages are left while sighing heavily into a cup of tea, it is perfectly acceptable to admit defeat and move on with your life.
Stay fabulous,
Luce 💋
