Completely Obsessed

What’s a thing you were completely obsessed with as a kid?

When I was little, I became completely obsessed with treasure maps.

Not actual treasure, mind you.

Just the maps.

I used to draw them constantly. Napkins, notebooks, school papers, the backs of old receipts Mum left on the kitchen counter… nothing was safe.

Every map had:

  • an “X”
  • a dangerous shortcut
  • at least one cave
  • and something called “certain doom” written somewhere dramatic.

I had absolutely no idea what “certain doom” actually meant, but adventure stories seemed very confident about it, so naturally I included it everywhere.

Dad once found one of my maps under the sofa and genuinely spent ten minutes trying to figure out where the route started before realising it led through the airing cupboard and ended behind the washing machine.

To be fair, I’d hidden biscuits there earlier that week, so technically there was treasure involved.

The strange thing about being a kid is how seriously you take things nobody else can even see.

I could stare at a hand-drawn map for hours imagining forests, hidden tunnels, secret rivers and mysterious strangers waiting at the end of the trail.

Meanwhile the “forest” was usually Mrs. Atkinson’s hedge and the dangerous river was a puddle near the postbox.

Honestly, not much has changed.

I still think ordinary places become more interesting the moment you imagine there might be a story hiding inside them.

And to this day, if I find an old folded piece of paper in a jacket pocket, part of me still hopes it might secretly be a treasure map.

Stay fabulous,
Luce 💋

Don’t miss out on this week’s episode of Return To Mellow Yellow where I take you with me to visit my somewhat dysfunctional little family and friends in Saffron Walden.

Wait, does the nav block sit on the footer for this theme? That's bold.
