The Best Thing To Do

Which is the best thing to do in your city?

People always assume there has to be one big attraction in a town.

Something you’re supposed to mention immediately when someone asks what they should do while they’re here.

Truth is, my town doesn’t really work like that.

You could spend half a day around Market Square and technically accomplish absolutely nothing… and somehow still feel like you’ve done something worthwhile.

That’s usually a sign of a good town.

Personally, I think the best thing to do here is sit at the café long enough for something unexpected to happen.

Which it usually does.

Sometimes it’s small things.

Someone dropping half their shopping in the middle of the square while three different people appear out of nowhere to help pick it up.

A certain retired gentleman materialising from thin air because somebody parked slightly outside a painted line.

One man loudly insisting he can absolutely repair something despite everybody nearby quietly agreeing he probably shouldn’t.

And every now and then, the quiet one at the end of the table says something so painfully accurate that the entire conversation stops for a few seconds afterwards.

The funny thing about this place is that most of the good parts aren’t planned.

You don’t come here for landmarks or excitement.

You come here because the town has a habit of slowing people down without them noticing.

One cup of tea turns into three.

A quick stop somehow becomes an afternoon.

And before long, everybody seems to know everybody else’s business without anyone being entirely sure how that happened.

Mind you, according to someone I know very well, the real secret to surviving here is avoiding unnecessary conversations with retired officials and never agreeing to anything that begins with the words “trust me, I’ve got an idea.”

Honestly… that’s probably solid advice too.

Stay fabulous,
Luce 💋

Wait, does the nav block sit on the footer for this theme? That's bold.
