Mugs, Mum, and Misery

What do you complain about the most?

If there’s one thing I’ve earned a PhD in, it’s complaining. Not professionally, of course — I’m far too polite for that. But ask me what I complain about the most? Easy.

Mugs left in the sink.

Not by the sink. Not rinsed and stacked lovingly in the dishwasher. No. In the sink, like abandoned ships waiting for rescue. It’s always “Oh, I was going to wash that,” or “I didn’t know we were out of clean ones.” Darling, we have seventeen. Unless you’ve opened a side hustle as a café for foxes, someone’s hiding them.

Then there’s Mum’s weather commentary.

A full meteorological broadcast every time someone opens a window. “Bit nippy, isn’t it?” “That sky’s looking ominous.” “They said it might sleet, but I think it’s lying snow.” No one’s ever sure who they are, but they’ve got a lot to answer for.

And don’t get me started on supermarket self-checkouts. I’ll scan one apple and the machine has a breakdown like I’ve just hacked MI6. “Unexpected item in the bagging area.” Yes, it’s an apple, calm down.

But in truth?

It’s the little things I complain about, because the big things — like how fast time goes, or how much I miss people who aren’t here anymore — those stay quiet, tucked away in the space between mugs and drizzle forecasts.

So if I’m grumbling about a cup in the sink… maybe it’s just my way of saying I love you. But for heaven’s sake, rinse the mug.

Stay fabulous,
Luce 💋
