THE INNER CIRCLE

List the people you admire and look to for advice

You ever have those people in your life—the ones you turn to when your brain’s doing the jitterbug and your heart’s all out of sync?

Yeah, me too.

Some folks collect stamps, I collect sages. Each one tucked somewhere inside me like little sparkling wisdom coins I carry in my metaphorical purse.

So today, let me open that purse and show you who I look to when I need advice, guidance, or just a good ol’ reality check:

1. Miss Geraldine—from the studio.
This woman taught me how to swing-out, sit up straight, and never apologize for taking space on the floor or in life. She’s the kind of lady who corrects your posture mid-sentence and makes it sound like a compliment.
Her advice? “You don’t need to shrink for anyone, sugar. Shoulders back, chin up, now go shine.”
Yes ma’am.

2. My Uncle Rex.
Now, he’s the type who wears socks with sandals, but somehow still ends up being right about most things. Grew up fixing trucks, but somehow always knows what to say when I feel like my gears are grinding.
His motto: “You can’t dance if you’re staring at your feet.”
Life lesson disguised as backyard wisdom.

3. Dr. Maya Angelou (in spirit, of course).
She’s not alive to give me advice personally, but her voice lives on my bookshelf—and in my bones. When the world starts to fray at the edges, I read her words out loud until I believe them again.
“When someone shows you who they are, believe them.”
Whew. That one still hits.

4. My bestie, Trina.
You know that friend who texts you just the word “GUUUURL” and suddenly you’re seen, heard, and hyped? Yeah, that’s Trina. She once gave me a three-minute pep talk in the public bathroom of a Lindy Hop exchange while reapplying her lipstick.
Her finest advice: “Be humble enough to learn, but fabulous enough to never be overlooked.”
That’s now my ringtone.

5. And finally… the woman in the mirror.
Yeah, she’s flawed. Bit of a mess some days. But she knows me better than anyone else, and when I get quiet enough to listen—really listen—she always tells me the truth.
Sometimes it’s: “Go rest, babe.”
Other times: “You’re playing small again, stop it.”

These people are the chorus in my head. They don’t always agree, but together they help me find my tempo when I’ve lost the beat.

We all need a few voices that help us tune into our own.

So darling, tell me…
Who’s in your inner circle?

Stay fabulous,
