One Day Only: Queen of the Train Station Announcements

What’s a job you would like to do for just one day?

If I could do any job for just one day — just one glorious, whirlwind, high-heeled day — I’d be the voice behind the announcements at a major train station.

Yes, darling. That woman. The one with the perfectly enunciated tone that echoes through the arches of the platforms like a calm goddess of punctuality.

“The 09:47 service to Liverpool Street is now arriving at Platform 4. Please mind the gap.”

Tell me that’s not iconic.

Now picture this: I show up at Cambridge station wearing a retro pencil skirt and a polka-dot blouse with just the right amount of sass, and I strut into the announcer’s booth like I was born to narrate British rail travel.

But, of course, I’m Luce. So I’d have to zhuzh it up just a little. Just enough to stay on-brand and not get sacked before lunch.

“Platform 3 is now ready to welcome the 11:15 express to King’s Cross — mind your toes, bags, and dignity while boarding, darlings.”

See? Informative and motivational.

Imagine the chaos I could sprinkle in between timetables — a little cheeky weather update, maybe a quick reminder to hydrate, or a short poem between long delays.

“We regret to announce that the 14:06 to Norwich is delayed by approximately 18 minutes. While we wait, take a deep breath and remember: you are more than your schedule.”

Honestly, I’d make people look forward to delays.

I think there’s something romantic about being the invisible voice that holds a city together. Trains running, people moving, lovers reuniting, and stressed students trying not to miss their ride. And there I’d be — the calm in the storm, the sass in the system.

It’s a one-day gig because, let’s be real, I’d probably get fired by dinnertime for reading someone’s outfit to filth over the loudspeaker.

But for that one day? That one moment? I’d have the whole of Cambridge listening — smiling, maybe even laughing, all while catching their trains just a little lighter in spirit.

And when my shift ends, I’d hang up my headset, toss a wink to the station master, and glide out onto Platform 1 like the queen I was for a day.

Mic drop. Train whistle. End scene.

Stay fabulous,
Luce 💋
