The One Word I’d Gladly Retire

If you could permanently ban a word from general usage, which one would it be? Why?

If I had the power to permanently ban one word from general usage, it wouldn’t be anything dramatic or scandalous.

It would be the word “should.”

You know the one.

“I should be further along by now.”

“I should act more like this.”

“I should dress differently.”

“I should stop dreaming and be sensible.”

Such a tiny word… and yet it carries the weight of a thousand expectations — most of them not even our own.

I’ve noticed that “should” rarely arrives alone. It brings guilt, comparison, and that dreadful little voice that insists everyone else has life figured out while you’re still reading the instructions upside down.

And honestly? Life is far more interesting when we replace should with want, choose, or even why not?

Because the truth is, the moment we let go of “should,” something magical happens.

We stop living according to invisible rulebooks and start listening to ourselves instead.

Maybe you don’t should wake up at five.

Maybe you want slow mornings with good coffee.

Maybe you don’t should follow the safe path.

Maybe you’re meant to wander a little — heels clicking, music playing, heart leading the way.

Now don’t get me wrong — responsibility still exists. Bills need paying, alarms still ring, and someone has to remember where the car keys went. But the difference between should and choose is enormous.

One feels like pressure.

The other feels like power.

So yes — if I could ban one word forever, it would be that one. Not because discipline is overrated, but because life becomes infinitely lighter when we stop measuring ourselves against imaginary expectations.

After all, darling… the most fabulous life isn’t the one you should live.

It’s the one you decide to create — unapologetically, imperfectly, and entirely your own.

Stay fabulous,
Luce 💋
