Tell us about your favorite pair of shoes, and where they’ve taken you.

I’ve owned many shoes in my life — some sensible, some dramatic, some that absolutely lied about being “comfortable after ten minutes.” But my favourites? A pair of worn, soft leather dance shoes that have followed me through more stories than any diary ever could.

They’re not flashy. No designer logo, no towering heel. Just simple black swing shoes, scuffed at the toes and tied with laces that have been replaced so many times I’ve lost count. If you saw them on a shelf, you’d probably walk right past them. But put on a little brass band and suddenly they remember every step I’ve ever learned.

Those shoes have carried me across polished dance floors that smelled of old wood and laughter. They’ve taken me through Lindy socials where strangers became friends in a single swing-out. They’ve survived rainy walks home when the music still echoed in my head and my cheeks hurt from smiling too much.

And sometimes, they’ve taken me somewhere quieter.

Back home in Saffron, they’ve clicked softly across the Beaumont kitchen tiles when Mum was humming at the stove and Dad pretended not to watch me practice turns. Frank once said good shoes don’t just hold your feet — they hold your courage. He should know. He taught me my first proper spin in the garden one summer, and those same shoes still remember it better than I do.

I think that’s why I keep them.

Not because they’re perfect — they’re far from it — but because they know the roads I’ve walked when I was brave, when I was scared, when I didn’t know where I was going but trusted the rhythm anyway.

Shoes like that don’t just take you places.

They remind you who you were when you got there.
