A Quiet Kind of Pride

Are you patriotic? What does being patriotic mean to you?

Patriotism, to me, has never been about waving the loudest flag or proving anything to anyone. It’s quieter than that. Softer around the edges. More like the feeling you get when you hear a familiar accent in a crowded room or smell a dish that instantly takes you back to someone’s kitchen table.

I think being patriotic is less about borders and more about belonging — the people, the humor, the shared references that make you feel at home even on an ordinary Tuesday. It’s caring enough about where you come from to want it to be kind, fair, and just a little bit better tomorrow than it was yesterday.

Some people show patriotism through grand gestures. Others show it by looking after their neighbors, supporting local traditions, or simply keeping the kettle warm for whoever needs a chat. I lean toward the second kind. The small-town version. The one that says, “We’re in this together,” even when we disagree.

Because loving a place doesn’t mean thinking it’s perfect. It means believing it’s worth caring for — worth laughing with, worth questioning, worth protecting when it matters most.

So yes… maybe I am patriotic, in my own way. Not loud. Not flashy. Just quietly grateful for the stories, the people, and the little pieces of home that travel with me wherever I go.
