Organise that drawer

Something on your ”to-do list” that never gets done.

Oh darling — if my to-do list were a person, it would be reclining on a chaise lounge with a cucumber eye mask, sipping tea, and laughing softly at me.

There’s one thing on it that has followed me for years now.

Not days.

Not weeks.

Years.

Right there at the bottom in slightly hopeful handwriting:

“Organise that drawer.”

You know the one.

Every home has it.

The drawer of doom.

The place where loose batteries go to retire, where mystery keys live their best anonymous lives, where old takeaway menus from restaurants that closed in 2014 mingle with half a roll of sellotape, three pens that don’t work, one pen that almost works, and a screwdriver that definitely does not belong in a kitchen.

Mine is basically a museum of unfinished intentions.

Every few months I open it with purpose.

Today is the day, Luce.

You’re a grown woman.

You can handle this.

I pull out one item.

A tangled phone charger from a model of phone I no longer own.

I sigh.

Put it back.

Close the drawer.

Reward myself with tea.

And somehow — magically — the drawer remains unorganised.

It’s impressive, really. The consistency.

I’ve decluttered wardrobes.

I’ve Marie-Kondo’d entire shelves.

I’ve even sorted photos on my phone (which is basically emotional archaeology).

But that drawer?

Untouchable.

It’s like the Bermuda Triangle of productivity.

Part of me thinks I keep it messy because it’s comforting.

Proof that I’m not actually as polished as I pretend to be.

Because behind the lipstick, the confidence, and the glitter-sprinkled post-it notes…

there’s a woman who absolutely cannot commit to sorting a drawer.

And honestly?

I’m starting to respect it.

Some things in life aren’t meant to be fixed.

Some things are meant to remain gloriously chaotic.

So if you’re ever feeling bad about something on your to-do list that never gets done…

Just remember.

Somewhere out there, my drawer is still full of mystery keys, dead batteries, and broken pens.

And we’re both doing just fine.

Stay fabulous,
Luce 💋

Don’t miss out on this week’s episode of Return To Mellow Yellow where I take you with me to visit my somewhat dysfunctional little family and friends in Saffron Walden.
