The Things I’d Do While You Slept

If you didn’t need sleep, what would you do with all the extra time?

If I didn’t need sleep, I think I would become quietly unstoppable.

First of all — I’d have a second life at night. Not a chaotic one. A beautiful, soft, candle-lit version of myself. I’d read everything I never seem to have time for. The kind of books that make you put your hand on your chest and stare at the ceiling afterwards.

I’d reorganise things that don’t technically need reorganising. Drawers. Thoughts. Old memories. I’d be very gentle with myself at three in the morning.

I’d walk through empty streets with a coat pulled tight around me and fall in love with city lights all over again. There’s something very romantic about silence that isn’t loneliness.

I’d write letters I never send. Pages and pages of them.

I’d learn things just because I can — languages, complicated recipes, how to dance without looking like I’m counting steps in my head. I’d practise being softer and braver at the same time.

And honestly?

I’d probably just sit by a window sometimes. Watching the world breathe. Letting myself feel everything without having to rush to the next day.

Sleep is lovely.

But if I didn’t need it, I’d make the darkness feel like home.
