Darling, I’d Pick the One Woman Who Rewrote the Rules

If you could meet a historical figure, who would it be and why?

If I could meet any historical figure, I wouldn’t waste my wish on a king or a philosopher or someone who’d insist on explaining the world to me like I’d never lived in it.
No, Darling. I’d choose Josephine Baker.

Not because she was glamorous — although let’s be honest, she absolutely was — but because she walked into rooms that weren’t built for her and owned them anyway. She didn’t ask for permission. She didn’t wait to be invited in. She danced her way through barriers and expectations and the entire concept of “Know your place.”

I love her for her movement — yes — the way her body told stories before she ever opened her mouth. But mostly I love her for her refusal to shrink. For the audacity of saying, “I’ll be extraordinary, thank you,” and then simply becoming it.

If I could meet her, I’d want to sit somewhere quiet — just the two of us, maybe a dim Parisian backstage dressing room — and ask her the question I think every woman with standards eventually asks:

“How did you keep your own light when everyone tried to dim it?”

And I imagine she’d just laugh — that deep, velvet laugh of someone who knew her worth long before the world caught up — and say something effortlessly iconic like:

“Darling, you don’t let them. You sparkle anyway.”

Which, frankly, is advice I suspect I’ve been following my entire life.

Stay fabulous,
Luce 💋
