A Glitter In A Gray Room

Tell us about a time when you felt out of place.

Darling, I’ll never forget the first time I truly felt out of place. It wasn’t a dramatic disaster — no wrong flights or couture mix-ups. It was subtler, the kind of moment where you realize the room you’ve walked into doesn’t speak your language.

I’d been invited to a networking dinner years ago — all dark suits, polite nods, and water served in heavy glasses that made everything feel heavier. I arrived in a scarlet dress (of course) and heels that sang with every step. Heads turned, but not in the way they do when you’re admired. This was the turn of “oh, she’s not one of us.”

At first, I shrank a little inside. Smoothed my hair. Tried to rearrange myself into something quieter, smaller, grayer. But halfway through the evening, something clicked. Why was I trying to fit into a mold I’d never wanted to climb into?

So I straightened my back, laughed too loudly, told my stories the way I tell them — with hand gestures and sparkle. By dessert, three people had gravitated to my table. We ended up in a corner swapping dreams instead of business cards. I left feeling lighter, not because I’d “fit in” but because I’d stopped trying.

That’s what I learned that night: feeling out of place isn’t always a warning — sometimes it’s a compass. Sometimes it’s the universe whispering, “Darling, you’re not here to blend. You’re here to stand out.”

So yes, I’ve felt out of place. But now I wear those moments like a badge. They remind me I’m not everyone’s cup of tea — and that’s exactly why I sparkle.

And you, darling? When’s the last time you felt out of place — and did you shrink or shine?

Stay fabulous,
Luce 💋
