In Case of Emergency… Bring Lipstick

Create an emergency preparedness plan.

Now, before you imagine me dashing about in kitten heels with a megaphone, let’s get one thing straight — I do take emergencies seriously. I just also believe a plan should be as elegant as it is effective.

So here’s mine — part safety manual, part survival kit, part keeping up appearances even when the world’s gone sideways.

The Essentials

First off – Water. Non-perishable food. First-aid kit.
Yes, darling, I have the practical basics — neatly tucked into a discreet storage basket that does not clash with my living room décor. A flashlight with fresh batteries, a portable phone charger, and a small radio are all ready to go. Because nothing says “grace under pressure” like being the only one who still knows what’s going on.

The Comforts

The last time we had a power cut, I learned quickly that keeping one’s nerves steady is just as important as keeping one’s phone charged. So, in my plan, emotional well-being comes first.

I picture it now: the room lit in the warm glow of a few candles, the soft weight of my cashmere throw around my shoulders. A deck of cards is fanned out on the coffee table, waiting for an impromptu game of solitaire… or a rather competitive round with whichever neighbor comes knocking.

And chocolate, of course — the good kind, hidden in a tin where no one else will find it. A small bottle of perfume sits beside it, because in those strange, still moments, a single spritz can feel like a spark of hope. After all, if we’re going to ride out a storm, we might as well smell like we’re doing it on purpose.

The Grab-&-Go Glam Bag

I keep it in the hall closet, right beside my sensible raincoat. If the word comes to leave — now — I can have it over my shoulder in under a minute.

Inside, a perfectly folded outfit that works for any occasion from an emergency shelter to an impromptu dinner invitation (a lady must keep her options open). One pair of sturdy shoes for the practical business of survival, and one pair of fabulous flats for when the practical business is done.

Tucked into the side pocket is my notebook, ready to catch lists, directions, or those flashes of wit I refuse to lose to chaos. And nestled in a tiny cosmetics case? My signature red lipstick. Because if I must face the unknown, I’d like to do it with a steady hand and a perfect pout.

The Communication Plan

Emergencies often come with chaos, so I have a short list of who gets called first — family, close friends, and the neighbor with the excellent wine cellar.
We’ve agreed on a safe meeting point, and everyone knows to check in via text if calls aren’t going through. Efficiency, darling, is the ultimate kindness in a crisis.

The Mindset

The truth is, you can’t prepare for every detail. But you can decide now to face whatever comes with composure, resourcefulness, and maybe even a little humor. My plan is less about fear and more about readiness — for helping others, for protecting myself, and for finding the light even when it’s gone out.

So yes, I’m ready. Ready to be safe, ready to adapt, and ready to keep my lipstick game strong — because survival, darling, is as much about spirit as it is about supplies.

Stay fabulous (and prepared),
Luce 💋
