Once upon a dial-up tone….

Do you remember life before the internet?

Darlings,
Once upon a dial-up tone, before Wi-Fi and wireless and whatever else we’ve conjured up since, there was a life. And it was fabulously inconvenient.

Let me paint you a picture:
Phones had cords. You had to choose between using the internet or calling your grandmother (you couldn’t do both — trust me, I tried). If you needed a recipe, you didn’t search it — you begged Aunt Mabel to fax it. And if someone broke your heart, you couldn’t stalk their new girlfriend’s dog’s birthday photos online — you just suffered in style with a tub of Neapolitan and an Oprah rerun.

We sent handwritten letters with real stamps and bad penmanship. We waited for the film to develop and prayed we didn’t blink in every shot. We watched television shows at the time they actually aired. Missed it? Too bad, darling. You’d just have to pretend you saw it at school the next day and pray no one called your bluff.

I used to clip magazines, cut out quotes I liked, and keep them in a shoebox labeled Luce’s Truths. And sugar, let me tell you — that box was the original Pinterest board. It had everything: dreams, lipstick swatches, and a Polaroid of a boy I liked who never knew I existed (his loss, obviously).

We went outside without GPS, trusted our instincts, or got gloriously lost. We knocked on friends’ doors to see if they could play. Sometimes they could. Sometimes they couldn’t. And either way, nobody texted afterward to explain why.

But here’s the thing…
Life was slower. Messier. More present.
You didn’t scroll through moments — you lived them. And while I wouldn’t trade my fiber broadband for a fax machine, there’s something sacred about the way things were.

So yes, darling — I remember life before the internet.
And some days, when my inbox has 72 unread emails and my phone’s on 3%, I do miss it a little.

Stay fabulous,
Luce 💋
